General structure and educational contents

This is an International Master, born and conceived in Italy and open to Italian and non-Italian attenders. Consequently, lessons will be held both in Italian and in English (slides in English, comments in Italian with summary in English or vice-versa, discussion in both languages) with teachers alternating the use of the two idiomas in accordance with the audience’ composition (prevalence of Italian or foreign attenders).

The course lasts 20 days, for 8 hours of teaching a day (Friday) and 5 hours of teaching a day (Saturday) distributed over an Academic Year (10 months), and is integrated by practical teaching. Foreign attenders who won’t attend the master in presence, are invited to contact local hospitals where to perform short practical stages, as specified in the program.

After every session, the level of learning will be assessed in accordance with accredited criteria selected by different teachers, preferably through multiple answer tests or collegial learning discussion

Course attendance will be mixed in presence and in streaming. Non-Italian attenders will be allowed to attend the full course in streaming. Their presence at the San Marino University during the last session (thesis discussion and official conclusion of the course) will be welcomed

Educational credits (ECTS) are 60, as in the followings:

  • frontal and group teaching
  • individual study (36 ECTS)
  • training activities (20 ECTS)
  • thesis preparation and dissertation (4 ECTS)

Intermediate and final assessment

Clinical competence will be assessed through case study analysis and discussion. Clinical practice will take place in public or private accredited hospitals in the country where the attenders are living, will be managed by local  tutors and will be based on the ability to evaluate and manage a surgical geriatric patient, to use specific tests, scales and scores (Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, Frailty Assessment Scores, Timed Get Up and Go Test) and to make the right choice about different treatment options (criteria provided during the teaching “Decision-making about Surgery in the Elderly”), including general and specialistic surgery, ortho-geriatrics and onco-geriatrics.

Obtaining the qualification will require successful exams and discussion of a final thesis on pertinent subjects. Thesis will be in double copy and on digital support (CD) in MS Words.

Unsuccessful exam will only give the certificate of attendance, not the MSc qualification.
